On 25 January 2022, much of central and southern Malawi fell within the storm path of tropical storm Ana. Severe flooding has damaged people’s lives, livelihoods, socio-economic infrastructure, and key supply routes and bridges. The Government of Malawi officially declared a state of disaster. Official figures indicate approximately 995,000 people have been affected in some 18 districts throughout the country. This figure is similar to the number of damage and affected people registered in 2019 after Cyclone Idai.

The overall impact of the floods on food security is significant, as many have lost nearly all their productive assets and remaining food commodities. Heavy rains and floods have impacted agricultural activities, fields are inundated and recently-planted crops have been destroyed.

As part of our immediate response, WFP has provided corn soya blend to some 95,000 people in the four most affected districts of Chikwawa, Mulanje, Nsanje and Phalombe. Corn soya blend is a nutritive porridge made of soya and maize and fortified with vitamins and minerals. Each household received a 12kg ration to prevent undernutrition, meeting energy requirements for one week. WFP also continues to provide common logistics services to the Government and other humanitarian partners for the transport and handling of essential relief items.
